Caps Pens 2009 Playoffs#4 Penguins vs. #2 Washington October 16, 2008 - Capitals @ Penguins, 4 - 3, 7:30 PM The first mathcup was a major letdown for the Penguins, who got a goal and two assists from Malkin in his personal matchup with Russian rival Ovechkin, who was scoreless, but couldn't hold a 3-0 lead with Marc-Andre Fleury in net. The Penguins were 10-1-1 in their previous 12 against the Capitals and Fleury, who made 26 saves, had been 7-0 against them. Alexander Semin had a goal and an assist as Washington won its third in a row. The Penguins lost their third in four games as Crosby didn't get a goal for the fifth consecutive game and twice made mistakes that led to Washington goals. January 14, 2009 - Capitals @ Penguins, 6 - 3, 7:30 PM Niklas Backstrom had three assists, Tomas Fleischmann had a goal and an assist and Viktor Kozlov, Alexander Semin and Jeff Schultz also scored for Washington, which had four third-period goals. Sunday Feb 22, 2009 - Penguins @ Capitals, 2 - 5 , 12:30 PM In this matchup a notable incident happened in the final minute of the second period after the Capitals had taken a three-goal lead. Ovechkin gave Crosby a nudge with the shoulder, and Crosby retaliated by pushing Ovechkin's upper body over the boards at the Capitals' bench. Ovechkin then took his arm and gave Crosby a squeeze around the neck, and Crosby lost his helmet as linesman Greg Devorski stepped in. Sun Mar 8, 2009 - Penguins @ Capitals, 4 - 3 Shootout, 3:00 PM In the end, just as it should have, the game came down to Sidney Crosby vs. Alex Ovechkin, the NHL's past two MVPs, each with the puck on his stick. Unlike their last meeting, Crosby avoided much in the way of face-to-face confrontations with rival Ovechkin on Sunday, instead producing a goal and assist in regulation, then the shootout's only score to help Pittsburgh edge Washington 4-3 -- the Penguins' sixth consecutive victory and the Capitals' fourth straight loss.
