Few Flyers are household names outside of the homes of devoted hockey fans in Philadelphia. However, most should recognize the name Bobby Clarke, and soon Mike Richards.

It is rare to find a hockey player who can perform at such a high level in all aspects of the game like Mike Richards. At just 24 years of age, Richards is a consistent scorer, penalty-killer, physical presence, and leader, which is why he was a natural choice for Captain of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Rirchards' Leadership Was Evident from the Start

Speculation of potential captaincy was there even before Richards officially dawned the orange and black. He represented Team Canada as captain in the World Junior tournament, and he drew comparisons to Bobby Clarke early on.

Entering the NHL, critics figured the 5'11", 195lb center from Kenora, Ontario to be a solid 3rd-liner with 2nd-line potential. He was drafted 24th overall in the 2003 Entry Draft behind teammate Jeff Carter, who was supposed to sport more of an offensive upside.

Richards Honored with Captaincy

Following his breakout season in 2007-08 in which he scored 28 goals and added 47 assists for 75 points in 73 games, it was clear that Richards was ready to don the "C". During the off-season, it was made official, and Richards hasn't disappointed.

In 59 games this season, Richards already has 24 goals and 40 assists for 64 points. Even more impressive is his NHL-leading 7 shorthanded goals, two of which occurred on 5-on-3 situations. Richards' breakout speed combined with his keen hockey sense has allowed him to create turnovers and run away with the spoils, much to the dismay of opposing teams and their netminders.

Looks Like Bobby

Like Clarke, Richards is as tough as they come. While the current captain doesn't have the "mean" quality that Clarke is so infamous for, he plays through injuries and with his whole heart. He uses his less-than-intimidating frame to dominate his opponents physically. Richards can match up against the league's top lines to help shut them down, then put on a show of his own offensive flair. He may not have the tremendous offensive upside as the elite scorers do, such as Alexander Ovechkin and Rick Nash, but his overall game undoubtedly makes him a dominate player.

It seems almost inevitable that Richards will bring a Stanley Cup to Philadelphia. He fits the mold of what a captain should be, the fans love him, and he's a productive player in every aspect of the game. Not to mention that GM Paul Holmgren and owner Ed Snyder rewarded Richards with a practically lifetime contract of 12 years, showing their undeniable faith in this young, passionate hockey player. Needless to say, Richards isn't going anywhere, but Philadelphia is certainly waiting for #18 to lead them to glory.
