Goalie for the New Jersey Devils, Martin Brodeur has surpassed Patrick Roy's record for the most NHL wins by a goaltender and eyes Terry Sawchuk's shutout record.

New Jersey Devils hockey goalie Martin Brodeur now has the most wins of any NHL goaltender in the league’s history. Patrick Roy’s impressive 551 regular season wins is now a thing of the past. Next step: Terry Sawchuk's shutout record of 103 in the regular season.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Martin Brodeur has spent his entire professional hockey career as the goalie of the New Jersey Devils. Three Stanley Cup championships later, he is now considered the best goalie in the league for his outstanding wins record.

A list of this goalie’s impressive NHL records speaks for itself. As of March 17, 2009, he holds first place in the following records (non-exhaustive list):

  • Most career wins: 552
  • Most wins in one season: 48 in 2006/07

NHL Players Talk about Martin Brodeur

Considered one of the best goalies in the National Hockey League, here is what some of the NHL players have to say about him:

Ryan Miller, Buffalo Sabres goalie: “He’s outstanding. Not even for the saves he makes, I appreciate the way he competes. He finds a way to play the game every night and the amount of time he spends in the net every season is amazing… My first NHL game, I was staring down the ice [at Brodeur]. I figured out where I was [by] about the third period. We had a lead and then we didn't. We went to overtime and lost in overtime.”

Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers goalie: “It doesn't really matter what team you're playing in this League, because you're always going to face a great goaltender. But Marty is obviously one of the best. It makes you want to play even better sometimes when you face such a great goaltender.”

Vincent Lecavalier, Tampa Bay Lightning centre: “He's been doing great for so long and he's committed to the game. I'm excited to see him achieve his goals. But I don't think he's all about just the numbers. He's about winning every year. I don't think all of the records matter to him. He just wants to win Stanley Cups and that's why he's a champion.”

As well as the accolades he receives from his fellow NHL players and those in the industry, Martin Brodeur is adored by his fans. This was apparent when he tied Patrick Roy’s record of 551 regular season career wins on Saturday March 14, 2009 against the Montreal Canadiens.

Although fans at the Bell Centre are die-hard for their Montreal Canadiens, they gave Martin Brodeur a heartfelt standing ovation at the end of the game. It’s not often the visiting team gets any sort of cheers from the home crowd, but Montreal fans recognized their hometown boy and celebrated with him, regardless of the fact that he wore a New Jersey Devils jersey.
