NHL QUICKHITS

February 12

Bruins and Calgary trade four, Gaustad out for the season, Dupuis traded for Hall, Jagr becomes 12th NHL player to record 1,500 points, Spacek out with broken hand, and Foresberg possibly on the trading block.

Brad Stuart and Wayne Primeau traded for Andrew Ference and Chuck Kobasew

With defensemen Brad Stuart in the last year of his contract, the Boston Bruins decided to trade him away rather than attempt to re-sign him again. With the danger of missing the playoffs again this year, the Bruins acquired defensmen Andrew Ference and forward Chuck Kobasew with hopes that they will impact the franchise for years to come. The Calgary Flames are hoping to improve their defense and hold on to first place in the Northwest Division.

Paul Gaustad to have surgery

The Buffalo Sabres will be without Forward Paul Gaustad for the rest of the season as he undergoes surgery on his ankle Tuesday, February 13th. In a 3-2 victory over Ottawa, Gaustad’s ankle was cut by a skate, which severed a tendon in his left leg. The Sabres are currently leading the NHL with 80 points, but have said they will not rush Gaustad back even if they make the Stanley Cup finals.

Pascal Dupuis traded for Adam Hall

The Minnesota Wild traded long time franchise player Pascal Dupuis to the New York Rangers for Right Wing Adam Hall. The trade showed New York’s attempt to improve mid-season as they sit 11th in the Eastern Conference. Last week they acquired the NHL’s most penalized player Sean Avery in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings.

Jagr records 1,500th point

On Saturday, February 10th, Jaromir Jagr became the 12th NHL player to record 1,500 points in a career during a 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals. Jagr currently has 612 goals and 889 assists in 1,165 career games. The 1,500th point was an assist when he passed to Martin Straka, who scored to give the Rangers a two goal lead.

Spacek out with broken left hand

Adding more to their injury woes, the Buffalo Sabres lost defenseman Jaroslav Spacek while attempting to block a shot. In his first game back after missing three with an ankle injury, Spacek was back out 16 minutes in when he attempted to block Mark Giordano’s snap shot. The Sabres lost one of their biggest impact players in the same game, Paul Gaustad, for the entire season.

Forsberg’s future uncertain

After missing considerable time with nagging foot and skate issues, Team Captain Peter Foresberg’s future with the Philadelphia Flyers is uncertain. With Foresberg in the final year of his contract, the Flyers have been questioned about Foresberg’s availability before the February 27th trade deadline.
