NHL QUICKHITSFebruary 5, 2007Manny Fernandez re-injures his knee, Mike Shanahan will not be fined for comments against refs, former Blues owner Robert Wolfson dies at 88, and Martinek breaks left leg. Fernandez out 1-3 weeksManny Fernandez’s left knee gave him another set back as he re-injured it against St. Louis last Tuesday. An MRI did not reveal any new damage according to an article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Fernandez is expected to be out for an additional 1-3 weeks during which the Wild will try to maintain their position in the Western Conference. The Wild are currently tied for second with 62 points in the Northwest Division. In the mean time, Wild backup goalie Niklas Backstrom, who has two shutouts this season, will serve as the primary goalie until Fernandez returns. Shanahan not to be finedMike Shanahan of the New York Rangers will not be fined by the NHL for his comments against NHL referees last week. Shanahan criticized the referees after a home loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs last week because he felt the referees were using “prejudice officiating” against team captain Jaromir Jagr. NHL Vice-President Collin Campbell told a Canadian news network they decided not to fine Shanahan because they believe he has a right to his opinion. Campbell also stated NHL officials will not change the way they call a game because of anyone’s criticism. Former St. Louis Blues owner dies at 88 Robert L. Wolfson, who is largely responsible for bringing the NHL to St. Louis, died last Friday at age 88. Wolfson was part-owner of the Blues in the late 1960’s when the franchise had one of its most successful periods. The Blues reached the Stanley Cup finals in their first three seasons of existence (1968-1970) under Wolfson’s ownership, but always fell short of winning. He is survived by his wife, Ethel, his two sons and daughter, and two grandchildren. Penguins six game winning streak ends in overtime lossThe Pittsburgh Penguins were enjoying their longest winning streak since the 2002 season when the Montreal Canadiens beat the Penguins in overtime 4-3 Sunday, February 4th. The Penguins are working hard to catch Division leaders New Jersey, and it seemed their winning streak was the momentum they needed. Sheldon Souray of Montreal was the hero when scored just 2:01 into overtime. As of Monday February 5th the Penguins are trailing New Jersey by nine points. Martinek breaks left leg, out 4-6 weeksNew York Islanders Defenseman Radek Martinek broke his left leg Saturday February 3rd against the Montreal Canadiens. It is Martinek’s second injury this year, the first being a broken foot on December 26th against the Rangers. The Islanders called up Drew Fata to take Martinek’s place until he is able to return 4-6 weeks from now.
