Toronto Maple Leaf Stanley Cup Champions

Players And Coaches Who Have Won The Cup Outside Toronto

Mar 29, 2009 Dan Leggieri

Over the past twenty years, the Toronto Maple Leafs has bred a number of Stanley Cup champions... too bad none of them were in Toronto.

Since the Toronto Maple Leafs last won the Stanley Cup in 1967, there have been many players and coaches to make their way through the Leafs’ system. Some of those players were booed out of town, others were traded away and some just decided not to renew their contracts and went elsewhere in the league.

There is a surprising amount of players who, after leaving the Leafs, went on to achieving the greatest success of their NHL careers.

These are those players (and coach):

Shawn Thornton, drafted 190th overall by Toronto in 1997 and played from 1990 - 1991

Stanley cup champion with Anaheim in 2007

Ric Jackman, played with Toronto from 2002 – 2004

Stanley cup champion with Anaheim in 2007

Kevyn Adams, played with Toronto from 1997-2000

Stanley cup champion with Carolina in 2006

Fredrik Modin, drafted 64th overall by Toronto in 1994

Stanley Cup champion with Tampa Bay in 2004

Dave Andreychuk, played with Toronto from 1992-1996

Stanley Cup champion with Tampa Bay in 2004

Pat Burns, coached in Toronto from 1992 – 1996

Stanley Cup champion with New Jersey in 2003

Dave Reid, played with Toronto from 1989 – 1991

Stanley Cup champion with Dallas in 1999 and with Colorado in 2001

Bob Rouse, played with Toronto from 1990 – 1994

Stanley Cup champion with Detroit in 1997 and 1998

Larry Murphy, played with Toronto from 1995 - 1997

Gary Leeman, played with Toronto from 1982 - 1992

Stanley Cup champion with Montreal in 1993

Rob Ramage, played with Toronto from 1989 – 1991

Ken Wregget, drafted 45th overall by Toronto in 1982 and played from 1983 - 1989

Stanley Cup champion with Pittsburgh in 1992

Maple Leafs Are The NHL’s Farm Team

Since 1989, almost every Stanley Cup winning team has had at least one former Maple Leaf on their roster when taking their place as the league’s best team. Are the Leafs nothing more than a preparation for better times in the NHL? Are the Leafs the real life equivalent of middle school? Leaf fans hope not.

Fresh in the minds of Leafs fans are recent decisions to let players like Tuukka Rask and Brad Boyes go for nothing in return. Supporters have to be wondering if they’re doomed to watch their team suffer for another 41 years, while watching once great Leafs win championships for other teams.
