Trade Deadline's A Bust

The NHL Trade Deadline Is A Team Killer, Not A Dreams Builder

Mar 4, 2009 Dan Leggieri

Making a move to obtain a superstar at the NHL trade deadline hurts more teams than it helps. Just look at the facts.

Chris Pronger, Jay Bouwmeester, Nik Antropov and Marion Gaborik are just some of the big names that everyone will be watching on today’s NHL trade deadline. Whoever lands these players via trade will definitely bolster their line-ups heading into the playoffs, but that’s no guarantee that they will win.

In fact, it just might decrease their chances of hoisting Lord Stanley’s mug at the end of the season.

Have a look through some of the major deals made on deadline day in the past 10 years; these deals would indicate that role payers are the way to go, third line wingers or a solid defenseman, not the superstar that most teams salivate over.

There’s no exact science to trading players, it’s nothing more than a crap shoot, especially if you are building a team to win now rather than building for the future. Teams vie to make their teams better by adding what they think the missing piece of the puzzle will be to get them over the hump. But if history is accurate, the best thing to do is nothing.

Wow, this is a great article. Good job with the research Dan, and you are absolutely right about obtaining a "role" player instead of a superstar. As a worker at TSN/NHL Network, we have had many discussions and debates about the recent trade deadline. For example, the Boston Bruins aquired Mark Recchi & Steve Montador, both players who are passed their prime, but bring a world of experience (160 playoff games and 2 stanley cup rings) to a very young team.
Well, i guess we will have to wait and see if this stat remains true during the '09 playoffs. I predict Boston vs Calgary in the finals....Let's go Flames!!!

So does this mean you think the flames should have done nothing? I still think it's worth a shot trying to push your team over the top.

I think that the Flames made some great moves as well. Considering that they didn't have to give up the farm to get Oli is huge. A lot of GM's tend to "drop their pants" when going after a big name and the majority of these moves don't pay off.
